new spring, new start?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

where to start? i just reviewed my site statics and realized once again – i HAVE to start write in English. why not in two languages? well… it’s hard enough to keep me site up in one language. so here’s my start for new and better life – more English. will this kill Estonian? i don’t think so, there will be plenty posts in my native language, believe me.

second reason for particular language in this post is the topic here. i want to discuss a bit web creation. actually i have an idea. about one certain browser and about it’s browser’s certain version. it’s the Internet Explorer 6. WHY on earth people still use it? i have monitored the usage of it. yes, it’s dropping, the usage i mean. different sources give different % values but seems that IE6 holds about 10% overall. but… my question still remains – W H Y? IE7 was launched more than 3 years ago and though it wasn’t/isn’t perfect (hey, show me browser that is and follows the rules in every point) it’s more usable, much more usable than the sad IE6. IE7 is more reliable, more secure, more everything. how many OS we have currently that cannot handle IE7 or greater (or any other “good” browser)? marginal amount. so still – WHY THE F*** we should consider IE6 as usable browser. it can be my personal problem but until now i have always check my sites for IE6. but i’m thinking about dropping that habit and just replace it with a nice notice about obsolete browser. so how about other web designers? i’m I the only one left there? :)

other topic… is the screen resolution. as i work with many artists why all have different styles. and one component is the screen resolution for websites. again I see trends that make me smile. at least a bit. more and more have I “big” designs, more than 800px width. so what’s the limit? once again Google is our friend and it tells us that the 1024x… is almost at the bottom. let’s be honest – that resolution is used by laptops and OLD ones. but laptops tend to break more easily than PCs. so… soon we will have no more those stupid 800×600 resolutions. so that makes what… we can use 1024px (ok to use some “air” we need to contract a bit but it still leaves us ~950 usable pixels) with no worries on our minds and we can be sure – every decent visitor can see out site just fine. the rest… can go to he*… i mean the store to by better computer. we, web designers suffer anyway every day to keep the sites look alike on different browsers (the horror grows – different platforms) and that’s not piece of cake. i remember the time when in short time period FireFox3 and IE8 where launched. with all their “new and nice and good” advantages. it was a terrible time for us :)
